Pinealon

Pinealon is four residues, Glu-Asp-Asp-Gly, with a molecular weight of 318.3. It belongs to a family of very short synthetic peptides developed in Russia and often grouped under the term bioregulators.

Its sequence differs from the related tetrapeptide Epitalon by a single residue, which makes the two a useful pair: near-identical structures allow a direct test of how much a single amino acid substitution changes observed behaviour.

Research using it concerns neural tissue-culture models and DNA-interaction studies, the latter reflecting a proposal in the literature that peptides this short may act at the level of nucleotide sequences rather than at receptors.
