Epitalon is one of the shortest sequences in the catalogue: four residues, Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, with a molecular weight of 390.46. It was developed as a synthetic counterpart to a peptide fraction isolated from the pineal gland, and its brevity makes it unusually simple to synthesise and characterise.
Research attention focuses on telomerase-related activity and on circadian and cellular-ageing models. The spray format supplies the tetrapeptide already in solution, which removes preparation variability between samples in comparative work.
Because the sequence is only four residues, it is often used as a reference point in comparative work on short regulatory peptides, where the question is how much biological signalling can be attributed to a very small structure.
